About the Project

The Middletown High School FFA Chapter, in cooperation with the University of Delaware Cooperative Extension/4-H Council, held two community forums over land use in the Middletown, Odessa, and Townsend areas of Delaware.  This forum was student moderated and topics discussed the current concerns that were on community members minds about the future in relation to land use. A $4000 grant is allotted for solutions made through the discussion and conclusions from both community forums.  The funding to support this program comes from the Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, under Agreement No. 2005-45201-0332, through a grant administered by the National 4-H Council.

MHS FFA Action Team

Both forums were moderated by a group of MHS FFA students called an 'action team'.  These students prepared through training and meetings to run the forums in an unbiased manner to make sure that all individuals voices were heard.  After the forums, the action team met with representatives from the 4-H Council and discussed ways to use the grant money.  The council wanted to use the information from the meetings and determine how the community members that attended would want to see the money used.

What's Next?

The action team has determined that it would be very beneficial to begin an education process to help community members better understand the importance of their neighbors and their neighborhoods.  Action team members will have educational displays at upcoming events including the University of Delaware of Ag Day, the Appoquinimink Education Fair, the Delaware State Fair, and the MOT Peach Festival, to hand out informational materials.
